There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force;
pay them $1 million apiece severance with stipulations:
1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered – Auto industry fixed.

The Edmonton Journal article (The right of self-protection) was an interesting one. It reminded us that we did not abdicate our right to protect our person or property when we hired a professional police force. Not all of us are willing to simply be a victim, especially when the police are no where near the scene. If a thief knows that the rules of engagement are such that stealing could result in them being shot by the rightful owner in retrieving his property, then maybe it might act as a deterrent to such acts. I'm not all sure exactly what took place when some folks decided to lurk in the shadows to steal a farmer's atv, resulting in the vehicle captured, a civilian posse put together, and the thief shot. However, I feel more sorrow for the farmer charged with assault than I am with the piece of crap who wound up getting shot.

A huge thank you to everyone who worked to stop the impending passage of the Grain Commission Bill C-13.
Today (Thursday) in the House of Commons, Alex Atamanenko (NDPBC Southern Interior), moved to delay the second reading of C-13 for 6 months (the so-called hoist motion).
To their credit, the Liberals and the Bloc both rose to support Alex's motion. Alex's motion was not voted on today, and may not be if the government refuses to put C-13 back on the Order Paper for the rest of the session. However, debate on second reading of the bill cannot resume until Alex's motion is fully debated and voted on by the entire House.
The opposition parties have listened to farmers and consumers, and passage of C-13 and the government's agenda of deregulation of the grain trade has been severely hampered.
We must now continue to raise awareness of the CGC and keep the opposition parties on side for the rest of the session.

FARMERS APPLAUD OPPOSITION EFFORTS ON BILL C-13
The Opposition parties in Ottawa have listened to farmers and consumers," says Stewart Wells, President of the National Farmers Union (NFU). "And as a result, the Opposition parties are slowing down the second reading debate of Bill C-13, An Act to Amend the Canada Grain Act."Alex Atamanenko, NDP member for BC-Southern Interior spearheaded a "Hoist" motion April 2, which would delay second reading of Bill C-13 for 6 months. If passed, this motion would effectively move further discussion of amendments to the Canada Grain Act into the next session of Parliament. As well, Bill C-13 could not be re-introduced "as is", and would have to be re-drafted by the government before re-introduction.
"The Liberal Party, led by the party's Agriculture Critic, Wayne Easter, must be commended for their attention to the concerns of farmers and consumers as well," stated Wells. "Their support of the 'Hoist' motion shows that the Liberals do understand the importance of the Canadian Grain Commission to Canada's farmers and consumers".
The NFU President also singled out the contribution by Bloc Québécois (BQ) Agriculture Critic André Bellavance. He noted the BQ also showed a strong commitment to food safety and the concerns of Canada's farmers and consumers.
"The Conservative Party has been saying one thing, and doing quite another for some time now," continued Wells. "On one hand, the Prime Minister is talking about the strong regulations that Canada has for its financial sector and our perceived financial strength. The Harper government is basically trying to take credit for decisions made by previous governments. On the other hand, Bill C-13 is designed to deregulate Canada's grain industry. It would pave the way for the sort of deregulation that led to the world's financial disaster."
"The National Farmers Union now hopes that the Conservative policy-makers will start to work with Canada's farmers and consumers instead of against them", concluded Wells. "It's time for the Conservatives to start developing policies that are good for Canada's family farmers."
