(Joe: Ok to publish to DD too if you feel it relevant. The images are
quite interesting and revealing, I think.)

Election 08 Party Platforms
The following are word maps which provide an interesting graphical view of
the election 2008 policy platforms for each of the four national parties.
The abundance of blank space in the Conservative platform word map is in
fact indicative of the nature of their policy offering.

Attached to this post are the platform documents themselves. Only the
Liberal Party has, so far, taken their platform document off-line.

If I were to editorialize I'd say the Conservative Party ought to have
been first to withdraw theirs, as compared to the other parties' efforts,
it's devoid of detail and includes a speciously worded section on "costing
the plan" (page 43) which all will soon recognize as having been a larger
fantasy even than Harper's dreams of a majority government.

From: "Glenn Harewood"
Subject: Remember Harper's Suggestion that Canada follow the Belgian Model of Federal Government???

 Joe:
Here is a very interesting story on Belgian Federation or DE-federation.
Do you recall that soon after Harper won a minority in January 2006, he floated the idea that Canada might want to model its federation after the Belgian Federation?

Now that Harper has a numerically stronger minority government, might he not continue to divolve power to the provinces and territories, and DIVIDE our country along the Belgian model -- a model which  is showing growing signs of separation between French-speaking Walloonians and the Dutch-speaking Flemish?

With Harper continuing to govern in a cloud of secrecy, who knows what he will secretly do to  quietly  and neatly pick-apart, bit-by-bit, the Canadian Constitution, and destroy the Canadian federation  in the  next  two(?), or four years??

The scary part is that the damage Harper and his Neo-cons will do, may be irreversible!!!

STRATOS

: "Anne Dickinson"

Hi Joe-

I thought Susan Riley had a very interesting take on Mr Dion's forced  march off stage:

http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/opinion/story.html?id=ebb1d928-c412-4f26-99eb-4fab46408391&p=1

Prior to the last couple of elections, the Liberal Party had stayed in power too long and rot had set in. One reason they stayed in so long was fear of Harper and the neo conservatives and social conservatives who surrounded. him. They were eventually tossed out because the anti-Harper vote no longer coalesced around the Liberal Party.

In this past election there are a number of reasons why the Liberals lost support.including Mr Dion's lack of leadership and communications skills and fear of the carbon tax/green shift. That these perceptions were exaggerated by the Tories relentless and in some case, truly despicable attack ads is clear, however Mr. Dion was really hung out to dry by his own party.
Iron Law no. 27 of politics:

27a. Politician who advocates idea, no matter how good, stakes his future on it, and can't explain it to voters = doofus.

27b. Politician who advocates reasonable idea that may be implemented in the future = visionary, ahead of his time.

27c. 27a + 27b = Visionary doofus ahead of his time. Doofus is the noun.

Reading the insiders report in MacLean's last issue just served to increase my admiration for Mr Dion; however you can sense the puzzlement on the part of the Liberal apparatchiks  that he had come up with the Green Shift himself and did not want to ditch it even though they believed it would lose them an election.

Their amazement that someone would actually stand on principle and not kowtow to the party insiders, and Mr Dion's mistaken conviction that his stand would win out as it had in his fierce battle for the Clarity Act resulted in the leader and his party pulling in opposite directions.

Reports from the ghastly Mr. LeDrew and equally ghastly David Smith show men who actively hoped for Mr Dion to fail and worked toward that cause by an unending series of leaks to their preferred media mouthpieces.

If the thinking in the Liberal party is that Stephan Dion is their sacrificial lamb and that they can go back to business as usual with the same old gang pulling the strings, they may have a surprise in store.
Although to be fair, Mr. Dion DID choose on his own to run for the Party leadership. When a sheep in sheep's clothing becomes leader, especially if he's a third-place pox-on-the-first-two compromise candidate, he's got to be careful not to wander in the neighbourhood of Butchers'R'Us. After all, one has to remember that the latters' motto is "We dressed you, we eat you".

But...if Frank McKenna decides to make a run at the leadership, then the cat will be among the pigeons for both the Liberals and the Conservatives...
Then again, Mr. McKenna's been an incipient threat since the early 90s. Just how long CAN a scent waft in the air before it goes stale?

From: "Robert Ede"
Subject: FW: Hell, I should be president

Subject: Hell, I should be president

Everyone concentrates on the problems we're having in this country lately: illegal immigration, hurricane recovery, alligators attacking people in Florida ...

Not me. I concentrate on solutions for the problems. It's a win-win situation.
+ Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border.
+ Send the dirt to New Orleans to raise the level of the levies.
+ Put the Florida alligators in the moat along the Mexican border.
Any other problems you would like for me to solve today ?

Yes!

I'll buy THAT for a dollar! Given the US Congress' propensity for "practical" yet corrupt and nonsensical solutions, the above is in the spirit of US-style politics. Now, the trick is to train said alligators to go only after Mexicans trying to ENTER the States, not those leaving it. Then again, maybe something like one-way drawbridges could serve for that.

Think about this one:
1. Cows
2..The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments

C O W S
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in   Canada   almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

Either that, or give us all uniquely-coded, government-issue ear-tags. No ear-tag, no job, hombre ...

T H E    U S  2nd  C O N S T I T U T I O N
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq .... Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore.    (ed. same in Canada ...)

Actually, the whole problem is that the State still USE the damn thing instead of something modern. Then again, in a politically-confused country, it may be just the right instrument to institutionalize the local reality. Now, country-namewise, how DOES one translate State of Chaos into Arabic?

T H E   T E N   CO M M A N D M E N T S
The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this:
You cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal,' 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,' and 'Thou Shall Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians...It creates a hostile work environment.
It wouldn't be politically correct in our incorrect political world
(ed. ... regardless of the fact that the Laws of Moses (these 10 plus the 603 others) were only EVER intended for The Hebrews/ Israelis/ Jews.

That, plus the fact engraving each law on a brick or stone block would mean that said laws would be written too small to read in most cases. On the other hand, it could be a good way to make people stick to the straight and narrow. If courts were to be used as confessionals Catholic-style, operations could REALLY be streamlined ... imagine "Forgive, O Magistrate, for I have sinned. The Court Wall tells me that I did a 239 and I 313ed TWICE this week". ("Three Hail Obamas for you, my son. And give unto Caesar $57.50 if paid within the next ten days, or $75.00 after that".)
