The Afghanistan War holds my interest.  It is there the lives of Canadians are on the line.  The Americans are intent on introducing tactics decision makers have convinced themselves worked in Iraq into a much different war zone.

This is being done against the counsel of the Canadian Government.

Guaranteed is that reading the articles included in the posts that follow you will be more knowledgeable than any but the editors and columnists across Canada who have taken the time to do so.

        Happy New Year!

Having convinced themselves a combination of surge and tribal militias reduced conflict in Iraq to the point there can be withdrawal the U.S. is preparing to pour troops in a South Afghan surge .

The following articles are relevant to the probability of this strategy succeeding.

Subject: Militias won't save Afghanistan

Militias
won't save Afghanistan obtained through a Google alert this morning says everything hours were spent on yesterday in researching and then writing the Letter to the Editor posted below.

Well not quite. Quite reasonably no mention is made that in the view of an independent Canadian M.P. that it well may be Time to come home for our troops.  Nor perhaps the single most important reason for coming home, the view of Afghans toward the government our men and women are dying to defend, "No one can trust them," he said of government officials. "Whenever we have a problem, we go to the Taliban and the Taliban court." http://defense-technologynews.blogspot.com/2008/12/as-taliban-nears-kabul-shadow-goverment.html

Nothing said by a political decision maker can be taken as unalterable, as realities change so at times do policy directions.
Between December 12th when Dan Dugas, a spokesman for Defence Minister Peter MacKay, said. "The minister, the Prime Minister and the government have been very clear that Parliament has spoken on this, has taken a vote on this, that our mission was over in 2011," http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081212.wafghan12/BNStory/Afghanistan and December 20 th when it was reported "Harper dodges question on Afghan extension". http://www.thestar.com/SpecialSections/article/556627
nothing changed.

As of the 20th when "Asked if Canadian troops might possibly come home any earlier, Harper said flatly, "no."  Time and changing circumstances will  determine whether this "no" will always remain so .

This ANNOTATED COPY OF LETTER TO THE EDITOR is included to provide sources on the file otherwise not readily available:

The surge will lead to Canadian Forces being under command of Americans for they will have the greater number of troops in Kandahar Province. (1)

Inherent in this is the probability of more "collateral damage", more civilian deaths, "creating an ever more oppositional dynamic between Afghans and foreign troops."  (2)

Canadian Maj.-Gen. Lessard  when commander in charge of all 23,000 international troops in southern Afghanistan said of the establishment of militias "There could be some short term gain, but I really think it's more long term pain. . . . When you arm a militia, you think that you're giving it a role for added security … They may think also they are empowering themselves and getting a greater status within the overall region in terms of the other tribes," he said. "You have to be really, really careful." (3)  Though his concern is widely shared providing pay, arms and communication equipment to tribal militias is underway.

The insurgency generally has abated in winter. Not this year however, incidents of  improvised explosive devices and casualties have increased (4) and supplies are being disrupted.(5)

Time to come home is the headline of an article in which a Member of Parliament who has buried five casualties from his constituency questions our continuing presence. (6)

Well he might when the view of Afghans toward the government our men and women are dying defending is expressed thusly: "No one can trust them," he said of government officials. "Whenever we have a problem, we go to the Taliban and the Taliban court." (7)

re. the most explosive political book for 2009.
I once wrote an article about how if you would control an
argument so that only your side gets out, do what American, and other,
corporate types have been doing as a matter of everyday business. Make
good and sure that the media are fully aware and infiltrated so that
few, edited  objections get out, like those dangerous 'letters to the
editors'.
The Canadian Taxpayers Association and the National 'citizens'
Coalition, represent  the corporate viewpoint, NOT that of citizens
or Canadian taxpayers. Gerry Nicholls has played a part in the NCC for
a long time. Therefor, looking for the truth there-in, could well be a
challenge.

Hi Joe:

The Guardian of PEI figures lowering the voting age to include kids is an idea worth exploring. Why not? No kid has ever been taken advantage of due to their lack of life experience and a tendency to make decisions based on emotion rather than reason. It is not that we can't ever have enough dunderheads of any age casting a ballot based on God knows what.

To be honest, while I would like more people to become engaged in the political process, even debate the issues, I believe those who can not, who vote based on something akin to the eeny-meeny method, should just stay home. If that thought offends you, let us bury our differences and join together to fight to enfranchise infants, dogs, cats, and even the odd plant. The more the merrier!

Joe--this is the email I rec'd from the 'honourable' Harper's office.  I have replied that I have already written to Mr. Cannon but that my email to Harper was discussing Harper's own words and actions, not Foreign Affairs.

Harper promises to remain staunch ally of Israel as he helps light menorah
http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/Canada/article/158649
(From the article):
"Under my government, our country will remain a resolute defender of the Jewish faith, of Jewish religious freedom and our country will remain a staunch ally of the state of Israel," he told a standing room-only crowd gathered at city hall.

1. 'Resolute defender of the Jewish faith'??!?? And here I roll my eyes when I hear titles along the lines of Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, Commander of the Faith. Who's the dingdong who WRITES this stuff? Plus, what the heck is a Canadian PM doing, declaring that Canada's official policy is to defend a particular faith? Canada can legitimately back a foreign government against a 'non-government' (i.e., a 'ruling' group (there may be a better name for this), elected or not, that calls for 'un-governmentlike' action, broadly speaking) ... but a faith? Who's next on the list: The Moonies?

Stevie ... pssssttt! Your Sovereign told you to defend the Church of England, whose leader she is.

2. 'Staunch ally of Israel'. Well, ya can't accuse the fellow of hypocrisy, I'll give him that. Personally, though, I'd take more of an anti-Hamas stance and less of an open-ended pro-Israeli one. At least in public speeches, anyway.
