A CHALLENGE FROM THE WHIG STANDARD

Dion introduces his carbon tax plan at a risky time. Record-high world oil prices have driven the price of fuels through the roof. Consumers will see the plan as doubling their pain.

The Liberal plan may not, in fact, be the best. But it is the first to steer us toward what many economists agree is an inevitability.

What's really crazy is doing nothing tangible about climate change. Our politicians can't keep their heads stuck in the oilsands and deny what's happening to our environment.

If a carbon tax isn't the answer, then let's see some alternatives coming from the government side of the House of Commons - along with some meaningful debate.

This is old news, but when the issue was first brought up the
right-wing-nuts poo-poohed opposition, calling them crazy. The fight
wasn't about oil, it was about terrorism.

Well, Bin Laden (a worthy excuse to be sure, but an excuse in the end just
the same) aside, actually it was *always* all about isolating Iran and
putting U.S. strategic interests in the area ahead of the local interests
but that's a moot point - oil and energy are the root of all evil there.

Rather than finding a way to deal constructively with Iran and Russia (and
what choice, really, does Bush or the world have?), the Bush
administration has continued its program to isolate Iran. The country is
quite literally surrounded by U.S. troops and bases. The U.S. has
interfered in legitimate trade of Iran, blocking moves to build pipelines
from its fields to Pakistan and India.

A more engaged Iran would be a more pliable Iran.

Or at least that's the spin we get from David Emerson et al when it comes to
China. How is Iran any different than China of the 70's? Well, Iran is
actually more modern for one. But China had "the bomb" back then and
despite the differences, Nixon was smart or lucky enough to engage.

Meanwhile Harper continues to belly up and play Bush and Cheney's lapdog,
following a plan which can not work and will condemn our country, our
treasury, and our military lives, to an on-going war that will carry on
for decades.

What the country, and continent, needs is a "conservative" party that is
willing to think with its head, not with its genitalia and guns.

U.S. strategic interests are not always ours. They need to rethink,
fundamentally, what the changing world means and what their role will be
in it. They've done no rethinking of the sort, and are instead headed to a
global war over energy, not based on the terror subterfuge they've been
hiding behind.

We've no need to follow nor actively support their imperialistic delusions
while they figure out what they want to be when they grow up. Maybe a new
president will cut to the quick and start looking at root causes and
lasting solutions. Maybe, but I am not hopeful, given that one of the few
things Chretien said that I could fully agree with - was about "root
causes" - was so soundly derided at home and in the U.S.

What we ought to do is figure out how an incredibly lucky and wealthy
country can share the wealth internally, sort out our own domestic ills
and missteps, share with the world how we did it, and through those
lessons we will pull above our weight internationally without raising
rifles as a reflex option.

There is no real vision in Ottawa now. There wasn't with Martin. Vision
challenged yes, but its ironic: Chretien is the only PM of late which had
any real guts and sense when it came to the world stage and our
relationship with the Americans.

INCENTIVE FOR BUSINESSES TO NOT PASS ALONG COSTS

Those who say that businesses will pass along carbon tax costs to consumers, leading to apocalyptical inflation, miss a crucial point:  businesses are motivated by profit. In order to gain profit, leading edge businesses will cut carbon costs, thereby allowing lower prices and increased market share. The consumer will retain more of his/her income, and will have more choice re: varied range of carbon input products and services to choose from. $15 billion is less than 2% of Canada's $765 billion GNP. How a $15 billion increase in carbon taxes, coupled with a $15 billion decrease in income/corporate taxes (allowing corporations to cut costs and thus prices), will lead to runaway inflation is a mystery to me, and those who say it will haven't gathered the data to back-up this outrageous claim.

CONSPIRACY THEORY REALITY CHECK

Many of the self-described  C/conservatives who charge that the carbon tax is some leftist/socialist plot would do well to check the list of carbon tax proponents. From the pro-business Conference Board of Canada to The Economist magazine to US conservative  commentator Andrew Sullivan, increasing carbon taxes while decreasing income/corporate taxes is widely supported. It's conservative economic orthodoxy that income/corporate taxes should be shifted towards consumption taxes; if you doubt this, check out the conservative arguments in favour of the GST in the early 90's. The Fraser Institute advocates cuts in income/corporate taxes over consumption tax cuts. What should be taxed: productivity or pollution?

LONGTERM ECONOMIC PROSPERITY

In twenty years, will there be more demand or less demand for non-fossil fuel products and technology? The answer is obvious and our taxation regime should change so that Canada is further down this learning curve than others.

MUTLIPLE BENEFITS

Increasing carbon taxes while decreasing income/corporate taxes is  good for productivity, which is the key to prosperity; it has environmental and health benefits, both of which are intertwined with economic benefits, and improves the security of our Western alliance as it reduces dependence on dictatorship controlled oil. The less we depend on oil, the less power various Middle East regimes will have over us. This isn't hemp-toking talk ---it's John MacCain's!

EVIDENCE OVER...

For self-described conservatives to slam the carbon tax w/out consideration of its merits isn't even an example of ideology over evidence, as conservative economic ideology supports a carbon tax. No, it's a sad example of partisanship over ideology/evidence. To Tories (of which I've been one most of my life) who are open to carbon tax merits ---I applaud you. Our nation/grandchildren need people who appraise an idea on its merits, not on its source

Joe,
Your friend Brian M. made the Vancouver Sun today telling us that
an EEE Senate would be undemocratic, as the present Senate is

eh? Wow, the Senate's first duty is to all Canadians in the present
form.

Constitutionally legitimizing Senate elections requires the agreement of seven provinces, representing 50 per cent of Canada's population -- fortunately. Because that may never happen, democracy may be preserved.

This may seem counterintuitive to those who believe elected senators would democratize the Upper House and be properly representative of provincial interests. But as agents of conflicting provincial interests if provincial elections were allowed, elected senators would be unable to fulfil their legitimate role and would threaten national unity.

The Senate is intended to check the inherently unstable partisanship we see daily in the Commons question period. Because of its appointed status, it is an unobstructive check on partisan excess. And since its first duty is to all Canadians, it is an agent of national unity.
This was well understood at Confederation. It is not well understood by Bert Brown or by Stephen Harper, the provincialist who treats democracy and national unity with contempt.

Joe:

I don't think that the evidence for the need of either is absolutely certain at this point.

That being said, in my view Dion's "Tax shaft," as I understand it, is nothing more than a sub-rosa version of Trudeau's National Energy Policy, gussied up as a "green" initiative. It doesn't deserve to go anywhere.

Joe:

I base my opinion with respect to the imperative to reduce greenhouse gases on a series of articles which appeared in the National Post over the past several months which I won't go into detail about here.  People can review these for themselves.  Essentially, these articles drew on the observations of reputed climatologists and other recognized scientists who argued that the evidence advanced by the UN's IPCC did not take into account the caveats and reservations attached to the work that they did for the IPCC when that body produced its final report.

Personally, although I acknowledge that global warming is indeed occurring, I also believe that there is also a political agenda at work here which has precious little to do with good science.

Canadians could be defending Afghan gas pipeline
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080619/afghan_pipeline_080619/20080621?hub=TopStories

The Conservative's Canada First Defence Strategy, released Thursday evening,
makes no overt mention of defending Canada's energy resources or those of
its allies overseas.

It does say that Canada will continue to "support and attribute" NATO.

If TAPI is built, Foster asks if Canada will be in Afghanistan defending the
project over its 50-year lifespan.

Your CTV article is a followup on one in the TorStar ealier in the week
which stimulated a post to CONSERVATIVE/COMMUNICATIONS/NET.

The following more detailed one was sent out ,ater in the day and adds
more data. We are bit players in The New Game.

Subject: QUESTIONS: A conspiracy theory verified? And if so?

Were there legs to the conspiracy theory that a proposed pipeline was a cause for removing the Taliban from the governance of Afghanistan?

An article "Is the Afghan war about an oil pipeline?" - http://www.slate.com/?id=2059487 while dismissing the thought does not mention the breakdown of negotiations with the Taliban in August of 2001.

"Last week, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher said the U.S. government has a "fundamental strategic interest" in Afghanistan that goes well beyond ensuring it is not used as a launching pad for terrorism, which was the original justification for the UN-sanctioned NATO mission of which Canada is a part."
"Pipeline opens new front in Afghan war" http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080619.wafghanpipeline19/BNStory/Afghanistan/home .

Has the pipeline being a prime cause of Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan been verified? If so, should this question be presented to Canadians for their consideration: in that a commercial venture is in process should the task of providing the conditions for its success, making "the path free of Taliban influence", be that of Canadian Forces ?

Members of Parliament for
Alberta and British Columbia.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Now that you have gone home for the rest of the year maybe, just maybe you have time to
stand up for those that elected you. To this point you have done all the things that our
Prime Minister and his Francophone staff has ordered you to do, in the first place keep
your mouth shut and only speak when it has been approved by the Privy Council.

Now you have FREEDOM OF SPEECH, if that means anything at all after the Kangaroo
courts have limited this right. So here you are, sitting in your constituency office wondering
what to do next.

Well the Alberta and British Columbia residents are calling trying to find out who you really
are, as silence has been golden to this point. What we heard from you has been how well
the Prime Minister has been sailing around opposition incompetence and his own members
failing to express their own views.

Some of us have heard and read Lawrence Martin, Globe and Mail, surprise appreciation
for my Member of Parliament, Mr.Russ Hiebert, in his capable address to the Standing
Committee on the Mulroney Affairs. Now it is time for all to speak and show, when an election
is called you earned the right to be re-elected as the REPRESENTATIVE of your constituency!

Do I say more?

Obvious don't expect replies in both official languages as to receiving my e.mail, but due to
etc etc, bottomless excuses from bureaucrats.

Yours truly,

Suan H.Booiman
