"We believe in a strong, united, independent and free Canada with a Quebec that is confident ... autonomous and proud," Mr. Harper said in Greenfield Park, Que., on Montreal's South Shore, where he attended a barbecue for Conservative supporters.
"In this way, we as Conservatives are unique," he said. "Because there are certain parties that believe in a united Canada. And another believes in a Québécois nation. But only we, the Conservatives, are promoting these two fundamental realities."

REALITY or HERESY?
Assuming only that high oil prices persist for the next 12 years, the market - all by itself - would probably deliver the bulk of Mr. Dion's commitment through conservation and technology-driven advances in energy efficiency. Note the 1.9-per-cent emissions decrease in 2006 alone. Note further that these reductions in GHG emissions require no belief in global warming, no belief in ecological disaster. They follow spontaneously from the inexorable discipline of household economics. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080625.RREYNOLDS25/TPStory/TPBusiness/Politics/Oil Is NOT A Fossil

I've never accepted the notion that Quebec is a "nation" in the sense that the term is generally understood, going all the way back to Robert Stanfield's misguided use of the term. I'm with you on that one.
Where I believe we part company is your contention that provinces have jurisdiction only over "local matters." Under our Constitution, the provinces are granted certain powers over which they are sovereign and in my view the federal government has no over-riding rights in those areas except where expressly provided for in the Constitution.
The case of the territories is more ambiguous as the Constitution is silent on this.
In any case, like you, I see my country as one from sea to sea to sea.

Joe,
You are not alone with the view that Canada one time was one country.
Today we have the State of Quebec within, paid for by English speaking
Canada. Political desperation to buy votes while destroying the country.
However besides that we have all the "minorities" with their own police
force called "Human Rights Commission or Tribunal" Some in deep
progress in restricting Freedom of Speech, as Canada slowly becomes
the socialistic police state suggested by a Liberal Quebecois fanatic
named P.E.Trudeau, since the politicians have become cowards,
fearing "to offend". With the rising power in Saskatchewan, economically
Western Canada can do without all things east of the Manitoba border.
Ottawa will make sure that this division will rise to serve Central Canada,
as politician have done since Confederation, being the reason that the
country will fall apart if you agree or not.
The Quebec political isolation is only the beginning.
That is my sermon and not afraid to speak out about it, as Eisenhower
said "There is no greater fear than fear itself".
The greatest treat is an union between Western Canada and Western US,
which is on the doorsteps, it would not take many US soldiers to walk
across the border for the simple reason that Western Canada has no
military representation regardless the French speaking Western command

Hi Joe:
Sometimes I wonder if there is any good news other than what I hope grace each of us through our families and friends. It seems once you get too far removed from that circle, things just go down the crapper.
The *_Amherst Daily News figures it is time to get tough with non-conformist refugees_*. Well, duh! This would be especially true for any group who are adherents to any doctrine, and leadership, that advocates the destruction of their new hosts. It is supremely stupid of the new hosts to then also arm such groups with the powers of tribunals such as the misnamed Human Rights Commissions that trample all over the rights of whomever such groups accuse. It is the right, or at least it used to be, of all stakeholders to be able to hold a full debate on any issue so that we all might reach a reasonable conclusion. Without that freedom, that ability to risk offending another in order to defend one's views at the risk of also facing sanction from whom you offend, we stop slowly evolving as a society in a logical sense and wind up quickly transforming into only God knows what.
I'm beginning to see why I won't be a subscriber to the *_Kingston Whig Standard_* any time soon. *_They call for an "adult" debate on Stephane Dion's latest carbon tax insanity._* Good, let Dion act like an adult and present his argument. If we like what we hear, then we'll buy in to it regardless of how much noise the government side makes. However, if one just tosses out a thought that does not have much thinking behind it, then one shouldn't be surprised when others call bullsh*t.
_*With gas prices continue to rise, consumption is dropping.*_ _*While demand is dropping, prices continue to rise.*_ So much for the theory that prices are being driven by market economics. What, or who, is behind it? Does anybody in a position to act give a damn? Well, it seems that "no", they don't. Being accustomed to a way of life that allows my kids a reasonable expectation to live until they are 80, have decent access to food and medical, a chance to travel a hundred miles in a couple of hours rather than 3 or 4 days, the ability to survive a Canadian winter, among other things, having an affordable source of energy is rather important to me. It will take more than bullsh*t and fantasy to cause me to jettison it for a return to more medieval times.
_*As for an alternative source of energy*_, something more environmentally friendly and renewable, I'm still waiting. So, don't bother me with tales of gloom and doom unless somebody thinks the issue important enough to produce the alternative. It would be nice if that alternative is also provided to the _*84.5% of the world's population (the 5.6-billion folks) unaffected by the Kyoto provisions.*_ China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia, Mexico, and the Phillipe's, to name just ten nations with a combined 4.1-billion Kyoto free souls, should also play their part in the band. Hey, it is all about saving the earth, is it not? Oh, I forgot. Kyoto has nothing to do with the environment, and everything to do with handing over our cash so we can continue to live as we are. We are such schmucks.
_*Now to your feature question, Joe*_, which got me up on my high horse in the first place. I agree with you that _*Canada is "one nation from sea to sea subdivided into ten provinces and three territories with jurisdiction over local matters."*_ However, I also believe we have an antiquated system of governance where two provinces from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Lake of the Woods have too much dominance over a continent wide nation. While they may deserve their nearly 59% share of the House of Commons based on population, *Ontario and Quebec do not also deserve their combined 45% of the seats in the Senate.* The concept of dividing the Senate based on regions rather than by province was a mistake from the beginning. The concept of making it a poor man's House of Lords was a mistake from the beginning. The concept of it being a chamber of sober second thought was bogus from the beginning. Yet, the idea of abolishing it, rather than making it work similar to the American and Australian models, would be a mistake.
Of course, all of that is based on the concept that we are one nation, from sea to sea. While Prime Minister Harper may say Quebec is a nation within a nation, it all comes down to the details. If it is about dual nations, then the clock is ticking, as those in Belgium might tell you, or those in the former Czechoslovakia, the former Yugoslavia, the former Soviet Union, or the former Scandinavian unions. However, it is interesting to note that _*Quebec or New France never was a nation.*_ It was merely a colony of 60,000 by the time it was ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. To put it in to perspective, it had the population presently enjoyed by Greenland. However, let us not let the facts get in the way of a good fable.
Al Gore has not.
Thanks for the soap box, Joe.

Joe--Canada IS one nation. Something successive governments have failed to
realize in their quest for votes. The CPC went over the line with the one
nation garbage.
They sold the soul of Canada for power.
Every province has their own culture but the underlying reason for being is
that we are one country and supposedly equal. We know that is just words
and spin. We know that Ontario and Quebec are more equal. We also know
that Ontario and Quebec have more seats up for grabs. Nationhood is for
countrys, not provinces. The CPC has added fuel to the independence
fire--and are proud of it.

Below is an excerpt from Peter Worthington's column today. I post this as a
postscript to my posting yesterday regarding the Calgary Sun's request for a
symbol of Canada's history. After reading this I realize that our
'education' system is bound bent and determined to erase any real symbols of
Canada's history--multiculturalism is our only history?

Many Canadians feel that the teaching of Canadian history in our elementary
schools is abysmal to misguided. I remember when our kids were in elementary
school some 30 years ago, one of them announced Portugal had a claim on
discovering Canada because the cook in Henry Hudson's ship was Portuguese.
(Whether the cook was or wasn't, isn't the point; it was distorting history
in order to be inclusive.)
I'll guarantee that the British involvement in Canada's history, is not
taught in our schools as thoroughly and anecdotally as it was prior to our
fixation on making Canada a multicultural country, with history adjusted to
include every faction.

Everyone should be aware of the "police state" tactics of the Harper Government regarding Bills C51 and C52.
Many thanks to Wendy Forrest for her research and tenacity in bringing this issue before the residents of Toronto. It applies to us all.

This information is very important. Forward widely to anyone you know in Toronto. We get the government we deserve by not being vigilant every day!

Stop C51 (and now C52)
Subject: Sneaking tyranny of Bill C-52, & legal challenge
Although Bill C-51 did not pass the second reading, the danger of losing our basic health freedom continues because C-52 did pass. So this summer it will go to the Standing Committee on Health, which is stacked with conservatives who will carry out Harper's agenda while everyone else is off on vacation and not paying attention to what the government is up to.
If anything, C-52 is worse than C-51. Further, if it passes third reading the government can simply attach C-51 to it, as explained by health-freedom advocate Chris Gupta:
An Order in Council (a cabinet decision without parliamentary debate, media inquiry, or public input via our respective MP's office etc) can be used to sneak an unpopular, unwanted set of rules into law. This would enable the Harper government to bypass all objections from the public and even some of their own backbenchers. The government has already sold us out on health issues.
(See Gupta's articles at < http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/control_tactics.htm>, especially "Another Health Canada Horror Story - C-51& C-52", posted on June 9th, 2008. If you want to get on his list to get updates on this unfolding situation, you can contact him through his website.)
C-52 thus pushes forward the SPP and other international harmonization/globalization and unless stopped enables Harper to present us with the SPP's harmonized rules as a "fait accompli" next fall. On June 20, Conservative member Mr. James Rajotte (Edmonton?Leduc, CPC) apparently using a pre-planned strategy that caught everyone off guard, put forward a motion allowing C-52 to proceed as if it had been approved by the House:
"That, at any time the House stands adjourned during June or July, the Standing Committee on Health or the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development has ready a report, when that report is deposited with the Clerk, it shall be deemed to have been duly presented to the House."
Apparently many Hon. Members among the opposition failed to recognize the significance of this and let it go through unchallenged. This motion's acceptance in effect negates all the attempts to stop or modify C-51 with one clever procedural ploy.
Independent journalist Helke Ferrie is donating donating 50% of the price from her new book to a legal fund supporting a court challenge to C-52. She writes:
"In my opinion something should be done immediately to tie up C-52 in court and challenge its legality so they cannot have committee hearings until the court has ruled. Should you have any doubts about this, I suggest you go to www.nhppa.org and read Shawn Buckley's analysis of C-52 which explains how it could turn Canada into a police state."
It is because of these new regulations limiting access to natural health and forcing adoption of GMOs in agriculture that the people of Ireland voted to reject the European Union's Lisbon treaty. The wording of the Canadian bills is taken from that EU treaty to which the Irish refused to submit.
What most people are not grasping yet is the fundamental legal difference between the system of standards and rules we have known and what is being brought in to replace it. This is the difference between English Common Law and Napoleonic Code. The traditional English legal system operates under the basic assumption that unless specifically forbidden, everything is permitted. Napoleonic Code reverses this. Everything is forbidden unless specifically permitted. And under the Codex Alimentarius, the list of permitted items such as vitamins is very short!
