FREEDOM OF SPEECH vs NATIONAL SECURITY

Until 17:27:02 my time was spent preparing a "F.Y.I.:" post to send out to newspaper editors and columnists.

The reason for this and for belabouring you the second time with this matter is that I see this as a matter freedom to hold opinion and express it versus spurious government action possibly motivated by political considerations.

There are links to four videos.  Visit them then make the judgement whether you perceive George Galloway as a threat to national security.

Should you decide he is not, consider taking the positive action of adding your name to the "Petition to allow George Galloway into Canada" Becky posted to the Digest.

From: Joe Hueglin <joe.hueglin@bellnet.ca>
Subject: F.Y.I. Ban of George Galloway, videos and www. coverage.

George Galloway being deemed inadmissible to Canada this year after having been here a number of times in the past has nothing to do with freedom of speech, so we're being told.

Minister Kenney's spokesperson's words  are "nothing to do with freedom of speech whatsoever" on the
Video: in which Sue Turton talks to Canadian immigration spokesman Alykhan Velshi about his country's decision to deny entry to MP George Galloway. http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1184614595/bctid17065456001

Meir Weinstein,  National Director Jewish Defence League of Canada's, says it's "not a freedom of speech issue" in the debate  recorded on the Video "Canada ban: Galloway faces his accusers a Jewish Defence League (JDL) "Terrorist" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAm7rfHKSyY .

Velshi stresses the decision was made independent of the Minister by the border security agencies "applying the criteria", "that he falls afoul of numerous criteria" and that he poses "a threat to safety and security of Canada", though no specific is stated.  The positions held by Galloway on the war in Afghanistan is Veishi's  major focus.

Weinstein's focus is that Galloway is a "proxy agent of Hamas and Hezbollah". When Galloway suggests he will speak to the planned meetings in Canada from he United States "by other means" Weinstein states  "we will see to it that the Canadian government will be monitoring every individual and organization that will have anything to do with it".

In the very thorough Daily Mail article "'George Galloway banned from Canada on grounds of national security "
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1163502/Canada-bans-George-Galloway-grounds-national-security.html was included the statement that "His (Galloway's) proposed visit prompted the Jewish Defence League of Canada to write an open letter to the country's government urging it to do "everything possible to keep this hater away".   The success of the letter may have led Weinstein to make the statement he did that all who listen to Galloway will be monitored.

"Let the Creep In" http://www.am770chqr.com/Blogs/TheWorldTonight/BlogEntry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10025966 in my reading best states the case for  freedom of speech being of greater importance than whatever threat there may be to Canada's national security. Quoted among other opinions is that of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association:
"It doesn't matter what end of the political spectrum the expression comes from and it doesn't matter if it is the most profound wisdom or the most piebald idiocy, Canadian Border Services Agency should not be in the business of screening what viewpoints are presented to Canadians in Canada. Full stop."

Having had only peripheral knowledge of George Galloway prior to him becoming a cause célèbre reported around the world, two videos were located in which he is speaking to the United States' Senate and to George Stroumboulopoulos on the CBC.  These and the manner in which a number of media in Canada, the U.K. the U.S. and other countries have reported follow.

The purpose of this post is providing information as opposed to stating personal views. Should there be an interest in these they have been posted by one of the c.4 000 to whom it was sent out early, very early, this morning at http://truetory.blogspot.com/ .
