OTTAWA - The federal Conservatives say Brian Mulroney is no longer a party member - but the former prime minister begs to differ.

A party source said Tuesday that Mulroney is not a member and directed further questions to the Prime Minister's Office.

Mulroney issued a statement a short time later saying he is a member - and will remain one until the day he dies.

Mulroney is at the centre of a public inquiry into controversial business transactions between himself and arms-lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper once referred to Mulroney as a mentor, and consulted with him on political matters.

But since the Schreiber affair resurfaced, the Harper government has taken efforts to distance itself from Mulroney.
