From: Ron Thornton Hi Joe:
I am so pleased that Dr. Hank is getting his just due with the Order of Canada. Removing all those pesky fetuses, no doubt in the thousands, has made this a better world. It is no worse than taking out someone's appendix, or something similarly disposable. Just another unwanted piece of meat.
I must admit, I personally have a wee bit of trouble with willy-nilly abortion on demand thinking. I blame my parents, those good folks who decided not to have me aborted, for my squeamishness. On the right or wrong ledger, I'm afraid they taught me that this issue came down on the negative side. Mind you, to their credit, they did instill me with some compassion, which led to some admittedly hypocritical thinking on my part.
For example, if the female was impregnated through being a victim of sexual assault, I could understand the reasoning behind the abortion. I can see how the anguish, the hate of the act, of the person who inflicted it upon the female, could be transferred to the fetus growing within her.
If a child was less than perfect, physically or mentally, I could understand why some people would wish to sweep such a fetus from their lives. Certainly not a noble reason, but some folks just don't have the capacity for that level of love and commitment. I mean, from what I see, a lot of so called parents don't seem enough of what it takes to nurture a child of any description.
If the world, if our society, was a more perfect place, there would be a loving welcome waiting for every child, regardless as to their circumstances. Unfortunately, in this area, it is not perfect enough and by allowing such a choice to be made makes it less so, not more. Then there are the choices which are truly a matter of life and death. If it came down to a choice between a woman one loves and a fetus one does not yet know, I could understand the reasoning behind the abortion, even if that were not the choice of the woman. As unbelievable as it may seem, there are some woman who would choose to give life, even if it came at the expense of their own.
Unlike Dr. Hank and many of those who celebrate the many good deeds on which his Order of Canada is based over the past 40 years, my understanding does not allow me to forget that a fetus is more than just a piece of meat within a woman's body. For those with a conscience, those who believe in life with a soul, that realization is the price they pay when they have that life taken. I do have compassion and understanding for such people for whom such a choice was not an easy one, one that was emotionally painful for the right reasons. I do not have any compassion for those for whom this is just another medical procedure, one ranking right up there with the removal of a wart. A human life has been deliberately taken, regardless as to the justification or even my own understanding.
As for Dr. Hank, the 85 year old chap is quoted as saying that he believes he is deserving of the honor. Such a self-less fellow. If I thought for a moment that he was a man left with a tortured soul for his sacrifice, I would award him the Order of Canada myself. Unfortunately, I am left thinking he is a fellow who just went about his business removing pieces of meat. A simple thank you from those he served should be more than enough.
Ron Thornton
