Map breaks 106 Ontario edas into five regions of nearly equal

Centre Lake. Electing regionally of party’s national councillors from
four provinces with two or more councillors is said to get serious
attention from Constitution Committee.

46 Toronto men and women we need to introduce

Your correspondent has been mulling over in his fevered brain just
what could even yet be the objective of the upcoming promotional
campaign especially for the GTA, as has been planned by party
headquarters in Ottawa.

I consider the campaign theme, methodology and all that to be top
secret and I will not reveal what I understand to be the details.
Suffice it to say, it is appears to be the same old, (yawn), campaign
rhetoric we read about in the national media.

Because I think there are substantial. different, needs for the city
of Toronto “political desert” I have dared to dream up a local,
alternate, campaign concept which the 23 Toronto ridings could pull
together to possibly backstop the brilliant concepts of the Ottawa
drive, or possibly even to move in on the (obeissance noted here,
please, of the) national “song sheet.”

I suggest that our 23 city ridings produce “x” hundred thousand
copies of a 4 page newaprint tabloid featuring both the candidates and
the presidents of each of the 23 ridings in our town. The content
would be very friendly, personal, introductions of candidate and
president photographed together, approximately seven pairs to each
page to allow the national president and national leader, again
photographed togtether, on page one to introduce the theme of the
tabloid. I use 59 coloumn inches to my tab pages so each team would
have to be ruthlessly fitted into a module - possibly by using 6 point
text, if they so chose to!,

I think, no, I know, such a tabloid could be created and printed in
the next six weeks, so that it would be ready for distribution after
Labour Day weekend in September. And the distribution would be no
charge, since it would be built around YOU, yes, you, member of our
party association, board of directors, or even local executive,
massively swarming every subway station - and some key bus and tram
stops over a two weeks period. You, again, the person reading this
scribble,  should be phoned by your board’s election readyness
officer and asked how many hours and on which days you will be
prepared to offer to public transit users a copy of a fresh city
pamphlet talking all about our local party’s neighbourhood leaders
and how to join the associations and how to join the campaigns and how
to matter, more than you ever did before, in strengthening the
Conservative Party option for residents and workers in Toronto! Whew!

Please understand I know this could happen between now and Labour Day,
but I am darn near positive it will not. First of all, I don’t think
our riding associations and campaign teams are working as closely
together as they would need to be to have 23 photos of pairs of their
top local party leaders taken, and copy cranked together by each pair
and approved by their association and campaign boards!

As I understand the rigid discipline of our national party there is no
way that 23 teams of local people could be tolerated to write their
own local perspectives on what they might choose, so very differently,
to write in this, “the first subway series newsletter” founded by
the vital, dynamic Conservative party and tradition in our great town!

Still, if we used our own $ in the ridings which got money back, and
they could help the poorer ridings, with signed commitments from each
worker as to how many copies they undertake to deliver, who knows how
dyspeptic this would make the campaign executives in the nation’s
capital!

Please understand that I would be pleased to help any such effort,
because I personally witnessed the effectiveness of the NOMMP city- wide flyers delivered at the St. Clair subway station.

The late Hon. Dalton Bales “take” on our public party

Dalton Bales was M.P.P. for York Mills when I lived there many years
ago. He thrilled me with his insight that we were members “of a
public party working in a public way, for the public purpose”!

I have never heard it put so well, but followers of this diatribe will
know how little respect I have for the private way we treat most
innocent communications within our party about it and its public
purposes. So I suggest for our party in Toronto, especially, thinking
long and hard about “the public way” as a new approach to building
awareness and then endorsements among the good, but unpersuaded
burghers of our town!

I think of the recent speech at the Albany Club of the Hon. Jim
Prentice as just one of literally hundreds of occasions which we keep
ruthlessly off the record and members only, while nearby, open-minded
voters wait to hear more, and from more, local as well as national

Nine other St. Paul’s delegates’ names, please

The all-pervasive secrecy of my own riding could not be better
illustrated than in “the affair” of the elected delegates to the
national convention in Winnipeg. The delgates were photographed,
charmingly, with their candidate and president, and the photos were
apparently forwarded without names to local papers for possible
insertion. The delegate selection meeting was a major event in the St.
Paul’s web site and newsletter, but not a word about who was elected
appears in the website since, and since we do not send out emails
about any such event, nuthin’ there, either!

Having been rejected in my last two attempts to be elected to the St.
Paul’s board I was pleased to be chosen as one of the ten delegates
to Winnipeg. For purely vanity reasons I would like to have my name
and the other nine delegates listed in a communication to the
membership because frankly I do no have a clue who some of the other
delegates are though I do have a copy of the photo which was taken.

I’ll go further. I would like to have their email addresses and even
their phone nubers since I can imagine reasons to meet before hand to
see what issues are of special concern. But getting that kind of basic
communication information is hard, very hard, really impossible in our
association, overwhelmed as it is with Privacy Act fears, mostly
misplaced!

Canvassing with federal candidate Heather Jewell

Following the pleasant half afternon pattern I spent in the provincial
campaign knocking on doors in my own condo building with Lillyann
Goldstein we repeated the exercise recently with Heather Jewell who
got a good reception at the doors though one or two wondered why
before the election. Heather had a voter’s list with her which we
marked up as we went and it will prove helpful for my (later)
canvassing during the campaign.

By the way nobody has told me that I am the steward for this building
but I assume so until otherwise advised. I understand that members of
the board are now introducing our candidate into their own buildings
or neighourhoods. She also advised me that we now have a membership
convenor on the board and when I get his name I intend challenging all
others in the association for biggest paid up me,mbership increase in
my own poll!

Because I have no restrictions on other use of the delegates photo
except in my newsletter I posted it prominently on our bulletin board
the day previously with the following mention - also sent it to those
fellow residents whose email address I know:
To residents of Avoca Vale,
Friends,
Tomorrow, late afternoon, Tuesday, June 24th from 4:30 p.m. I will
call at your door to briefly introduce the Conservative Party
candidate for St. Paul’s, Heather Jewell. Heather has been
purposefully canvassing homes and apartments across our local
neighbourhoods for some months and looks forward to having an
opportunity to say hello.

Here is a photo of Heather taken earlier this month when the local
Conservative association elected delegates for their biennial
convention in Winnipeg next November. Heather is fifth person from the
right, your correspondent is the old geezer on the far left.

Finally (?) “Conservative News”, no less!

Huzzahs to whomever is the anonymous editor of Conservative News,
(membership news). The apparent first edition arrived in my email in
tray without fanfare, and looks to be inclined to help build awareness
of the Winnipeg convention, which is a good thing. It carries only one
item about what a great job our government is doing and then gets down
to three aspects of party operations which will be of general interest
so I reproduce them here, to encourage the faceless one. Will be
intereste3d to see how often  the publication appears and some details
on just how many of the party’s membership get it:

Conservative Party Makes the Move to a Revolving Membership Year

This summer the Conservative Party of Canada membership program will
make the change to a revolving membership year. Currently, memberships
in the Conservative Party expire on the last day of the calendar year,
regardless of the date of purchase. On July 1st we will be moving to a
revolving membership year where memberships will expire throughout the
calendar year, depending on the start date of the membership. This
means that as a current member of the Conservative Party, your
membership expiry date may be changing. Read More... Tell a Friend...

Websites are generally dreary!

Doug Hawkins, reliable correspondent from Whitby-Oshawa, made my day
when he told me that following my concerns about their web site they
did check and find that one person listed had been dead for some time
and the president was not, as I understood it, not listed at all!
I have decided that while I think web sites are greatly over-rated
because they are so often edited by people who want to spend the
smallest amount of time on them, they have possibilities. So rather
than try to monitor the 40 + web sites in the GTA I am going to look
up regularly both the riding and the Member’s web site for Whitby-
Oshawa since they should be the best of the bunch! Am too tired to
review them again this evening but promise regular attention. Also
look forward to seeing the Minister of Finance on his web site say
something about the Conservative party and why his constituents should
consider it! Last time I scanned it, it, like most other M.P.’s
sites, never mentions the local chaps and ladies what brung ‘em.

Letter from Peggy Merritt

Hi Al:  Thanks for fwding you earthworm.  The print was tiny but I
have now learned how to enlarge it! Keep up the good work I think
the chances of improving communications in this city are just about
nil and until this happens I cannot see any chance of WINNING SEATS.
In my opinion Ottawa are terrified that with the large concentration
of seats in TO we may take over the ship. I question why we are
asked to spend $650 plus to go to freezing Winnipeg as token
followers when the so called national executive do not ask for any
input from us peasants. We have four elected (count 'em) V.P's from
the Metro area who represent all of Ontario, do you know who they
are? One of the purposes of this big Winnipeg meeting is to elect a
new national president and the delegates in Ontario elect Ontario
V.P.'s As for policy issues who knows, this is another big mystery.
One thing that is good about being a volunteer political junkie is
that they can't fire you.  I think our leader has done a magnificent
job and we do need to have a majority government but I don't hold
much hope for TO.  All the best Peggy
