Subject: For the DD: Garth Turner
From: John Anderson

Hello Joe:

It is a long time since we have corresponded, but I thought that Garth
Turner's latest outburst, as reproduced in your DD, deserved
non-partisan support.

I think Garth's choice of words was perhaps unfortunate but, on the
other hand, sometimes we have to be blunt (offensive?) in order to get
the message across -- even if the messagees are offended.

Garth reported that he got a slap on the wrist from Stephane Dion, but I
suspect -- hope -- that that was more form than substance.

Because, fundamentally, Garth is correct; we have had things too good
for too long.  We have to start thinking -- again -- as a community
rather than as an aggregation of individuals.  Individuals thinking and
working together as a community is what made Canada the attractive
country that it is; but thinking as individuals without reference to the
community is what will eventually destroy what we have built over the
last 141 years.

And while we are on that, I think Stephane Dion is on the right track
with his Green Shift plan.  The problem is that the media seem to be
focusing on all of the whiners who are thinking as individuals and who
are unwilling to consider changes to their comfortable way of life that
would allow them to avoid the carbon tax.

What these people -- and the media -- have apparently failed to grasp is
that Dion's "Green Shift" plan is not simply a tax on fossil fuels, but
rather an attempt to shift the tax burden from taxes on income to a
consumption tax on fossil fuels.

If people insist on business as usual, then people will, on average, pay
about the same.  But if people want to "beat the system", they can do so
by getting inventive and reducing their consumption of fossil fuels.

Best Regards, John A.

Re: "Preach change? Then live it" (July 3). Walter Robinson hit the nail on the head. We are told how to live but the example is not given by those dictating to us. The old saying "There is nothing as virtuous as a reformed prostitute" comes to mind. Ad campaigns and PR stunts are all our great "leaders" know. If they had to debate anything or inform us of the truth, they would be at a dead loss. They switch sides and argue both vociferously.

Our politicians walk the walk? Horrors -- they need their limos. Walking is for taxpayers. Of course, with the prediction that heating our homes in the coming winter will cost 45% more will stop us from walking. Frozen people can't walk; but we won't give off CO2 either. We already pay gas mileage for politicians and bureaucrats doing the nation's business, but all we get are higher prices.

The elected officials of Canada are "entitled to their entitlements." How dare you suggest they live our reality. That will never happen.

Subject: Adam Smith had doubts about free market meeting human needs

The Editor
Financial Post, Toronto

Copy to: Mr. Yron Brook, Director, Ayn Rand Institute, Irvin, California (please forward).

"Totalitarian communism and unregulated capitalism are united in their satanic optimism":
Adam Smith had doubts about free market meeting human needs

Re "Genius of Adam Smith" by Peter Foster and "From flat world to free world," by Yaron Brook (July 4).

Peter Foster is only half right when he quotes Adam Smith about the "invisible hand" of unrestricted market forces as self-correcting to bring about human progress. Adam Smith himself had grave doubts about the ability of free market to meet human needs. He believed that market is a two-edged sword, with unique dynamic qualities, but also with deep in-built contradictions.

The Wealth of Nations, first published in 1776, is a huge work of more than 1,000 pages. Apart from specialists, very few people read the whole text. Indeed, many professional economists, while freely making use of the idea of the "invisible hand," have read only part of it. Mr. Foster seems to have missed one of the most insightful comments, in which Smith was explicit about the importance of state intervention in the overall interest of the society: "The third and last duty of the government [apart from establishing peace and maintaining law and order] is that of erecting and maintaining those public institutions and those public works which, though they may be of highest degree advantageous to a great society are, however, of such nature, that the profit could never repay the expense to any individual or small number of individuals, and which it therefore cannot be expected that any individual or small number of individuals should erect and maintain."

Smith also warned: "But it in every civilized society, this is the state of deprivation into which the labouring poor, that is, the great body of the people, must necessarily fall, unless government takes some pains to prevent it." This is a far cry from the self-correcting "invisible hand."

Pope Pius XI once remarked: "Totalitarian communism and unregulated capitalism are united in their satanic optimism." The "satanic optimism" of totalitarian communism stems from the belief that exploitation and suffering of the working people can be eliminated by the public ownership of all means of production. And the "satanic optimism" of unregulated capitalism stems from the belief that only unrestricted market forces can ensure peace and progress. The collapse of the Soviet Union proved that former is wrong and the collapse of Enron and mortage crisis in the United States proved the latter is also wrong.

Our American neighbours celebrate another 4th of July. I know our American friends will thump chests and tout how great they are. I have to smile as deep inside I know for a fact they do not know what is happening to their country.

Crime has been a problem in the US. It is growing everywhere including Canada. The problem is our American neighbours have opted to suspend citizens rights in their zeal or assumption trying to address the problem.

How do I know? I have two pen-pals and know of another young individual who has suffered as a result of what has taken place. Colton Calhoun was arrested and charged with rape in Oregon. He assumed he had rights however in trying to exercise his rights he is now serving 100 months.

It is hard to believe DNA is not part and parcel of this matter. In fact the girl only had to mouth the words and the storm troopers appear. Would you believe the DA was going to charge other young men who admitted to their indiscretion but opted to provide immunity as long as they would not testify for Colton. Unreal indeed but it is true. This girl demanded to be used and if an individual refused threatened them, she brazenly stated "do me or I scream rape". This young woman was known for her antics as many were prepared to testify to but were caught short in the mess.

Would the DA consider this… NO and in all of this Colton refused to touch the girl and now serves 100 months while actual perpetrators walk the street.

Another instance… a 19 year old accused of the same thing (different girl). The DA was going to get him too. Lawyer after lawyer told the young man "plead or you will end up in prison like Colton given Measure 11." Young Austin opted to plead in spite of lie detector tests in his favour. WHY? The threat of prison and countless lawyers telling him an individual in Oregon cannot get a fair trial. He is walking the streets however he is branded for life and why… Legislators who opt to take the easy way out.

Young Geoffrey McMahan in Florida sits behinds bars and he only knew the individuals who did the actual robbery! Like DUH, but you see this is what takes place in a country that assumes it is so right it can suspend individuals rights to get what they want.

I was appalled to hear one father advise "heck what can you expect when officials brazenly tell you the police only arrest the guilty..". WHAT… it suggests to me the US has returned to the day of horse, rope and a tall oak tree. One must remember though perception plays a role thus simply put lawyers judges and the rest are "dressing". Indeed dressing to fool the public into assuming things are all right.

The disturbing aspect to this is we here in Canada with Stephen Harper in charge are in the midst of effecting similar changes. I am not kidding! The fact is and while we tend to not accept it Harper and Busch are so alike it makes on wonder. I am sorry to suggest a Republican is a Republican and dare suggest McCain would be no better.

Yes we had our July 1st celebrations and our American neighbours will celebrate another 4th of July. The sad fact though is there are many of our American neighbours who know all to well things in the great US of A are not as they should be. These individuals know first hand what it is like to assume you have rights but when it comes down to needing those rights forget it.

Lower court ruling quashes Francophone's traffic ticket; puts English-only laws in doubt

Reading Ms.Karen Kleiss report on the lower courts decision about
our two "Official Languages" cleverly called bilingualism, the question
is how long are we going to accept this political enforcement from 1969.

To this point the Canadian tax-payer has been ordered to pay billions
to pay for Trudeau's political dream of two official languages, cleverly
called bilingualism.

The media has swallowed this dictatorial order without a blink of an eye, being the voice of the people between elections.

The country is being corrupted by a fanatic minority assisted by
politicians in a desperate condition to buy votes.

Is this not the time for the Premier of Alberta to say enough is enough
and declare the province to be English speaking, if not he to, on behalf of the province will be forced to waste billions.

It will take courage to stand up and be counted against this French
takeover of our country.
