A Western Canada issue
Generally my focus is on high level politics or far distant places. The continuing efforts of the ideologically based Harper Conservatives attacking the Canadian Wheat Board (the CWB) as government intrusion into democratic free enterprise is an exception.A Western Canada issue
Whilst I was an M.P. one of my fellows called me "Joltin' Joe" though I could never figure out why I was rather taken with the term.
It was used in a COMMENT on a C.P. story as posted below. Which party do you think the other commentator voted for?
- CHANGE REGULATIONS TO ALLOW THIRD PARTIES UNLIMITED SPENDING, CUT OFF THOUSANDS OF BOOK HOLDERS FROM VOTING AND NOW AN M.P. USING HIS FRANKING PRIVILEGES. The end of having the 20% of world wheat trade handled by Cargill and other democratic-free-enterprise companies justifies any means. Will their boys take the five seats? If not then what? *Hi Joe:
In regards to the Nov. 25 Digest, the Globe & Mail is once again pushing for Ontario to get its full share of the Commons seats it deserves. It will never happen. As long as seven provinces and all three territories have more than their share based on population, simple logic implies that Ontario, BC, and Alberta can not.
Columnist Greg Weston writes that our banks are seeing profit margins fall. Hell, some are only making about $12-million in profit per day, according to the article, which helps explain why they need a bailout package. Big outfits like me and you don't. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy what the banks and governments are doing to me. I just wish they would send me flowers, or at least remember my name, when they are done.

Joe--first of all--anything spouted by Kazai is suspect. He is nothing but
a US puppet, installed by them and dancing to their tune.
How soon we forget that the US armed the Taliban and fought alongside them
to remove the Russians from Afghanistan. It was wrong for the Russians to
be there and it is doubly wrong for us to be there. We talk the talk and
bomb anyone for not dancing to our tune. I remember when Russia invaded
Afghanistan Canada got so many refugees from Afghanistan. Many of them were
educated women but we are supposed to forget that and blame the Taliban for
everything. Remind you of bin Laden????? Hey, that worked so well why not
just set up another boogeyman to tilt at? I know the Taliban was not in
power in Afghanistan then but the US made it possible for them--whoever has
the biggest guns wins? And the US made sure the Taliban had the biggest
guns!
As far as I am concerned, the deadline for this war was two weeks before we
started it!
Who is aiding Gaza when they have over 1500 children held in israeli jails,
not allowed any contact with their families? Who is bringing medicine, food
and fuel to Gaza? But that is ok? We want the Afghani girls and women to
be allowed to go to school? Anyone who believes that garbage is insane.
Since when has any army cared for the average person? It is all about power
and greed. I found it interesting that the number of 'insurgents' (how can
they be insurgents in their own country) have been killed but no mention of
all the innocents killed? The truth is they don't matter to us. They are
of no more importance to our leaders than we are. That is why the term
'collateral damage' was dreamed up. Much more civilized than telling the
truth about war and it's ipact on the innocent. The end justifies the
means?
War is a prehistoric method of 'settling disputes'. We have learned nothing
in the centuries since, other than how to invent more devastating weapons to
kill on a grander scale. It is us that must be stopped, not others. We are
a hollow shell of what we could and should be. We condone the starvation
and killing done by a favoured group but those that do not bow to our
dictates must be murdered? Remember Saddam Hussein--he was installed by the
US and was their puppet also--but then he started to take control and that
is not allowed. He had to be killed along with millions of the people he
supposedly harmed. I guess being killed in a US instigated war means you
are not dead? I imagine being maimed and dying from DU along with the next
few generations of Iraqis is not as bad as having a 'dictator'?
Actually, the Taliban wanting the foreign killers off the soil of
Afghanistan makes sense to me--they must have noticed by now what happens to
any country that the US 'supports'? Check it out. First an installed
puppet, then US control and devastation. Same story, different countries.
Sadly we are playing along with the 'war' in Afghanistan. We should all
hang our heads in shame.

- White Rock B.C.: A thing like the melt down of the American financial system doesn't just happen. There are causes and consequences to the way government and government policy is enacted. In this short explanation we discover that at the roots to the financial woes are ideological positions that are having an impact and we are in serious trouble here in Canada.

Dear NatPost Editor,
re Stack the Senate Nov 26/2008
Let the Rt Hon PM recommend the appointment of 19 new Senators - and feel good about it!!
Just insist that this bunch be appointed for "laddered" terms - perhaps 7 of the 19 will resign at the call of the next election and perhaps 4/yr would resign every year thereafter, until permanent Senators could be found - "qualified" not only by Mr Harper's personally-promised (a la fixed election dates?) selection process, but also "21st century" BNA/Constitution qualified as per ss 23 & 31(with the $4000 property & net-worth aspects seasonally-adjusted from 1867 to 2008 --that would be 60 -80 times the current $4000)
Perhaps after all the existing 'old way' Senators were compelled to meet the 'new' 2008 qualification standards (-it's the ONLY Dollar Value in Canada that has never been adjusted-for inflation), Canadians could see the Upper Chamber's original purpose ... to represent the propertied class ... equally from all regions.
